Biographical Information

1977-1980  Graduated from the Central (National) Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China

1983 Engaged as principal tenor of the Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestra. Further  vocal studies with Zhou Xiaoyan  at the Shanghai Conservatory and  with the Italian baritone, Gino Bechi (1913-1993).

1989 joined the (then) Victorian State Opera.

1990 studied  repertoire at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, attended National Opera Studio, London, and  studied  with Joseph Ward  at the Royal Northern College of Music,  Manchester.

Performance History

1984. Tenor soloist in Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel in Beijing.

1986. Prize  winner in the Tchaikovsky’s Eighth International Music Competition held in Moscow.

1987: Sang tenor role in Handel’s Messiah with the Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestra and chorus conducted by John Aldiss

1988.  One  only four singers chosen to take part in public master classes given by Placido Domingo during his visit  to China

1989.  Brought  to Melbourne by the Victorian State Opera (VS0) to join their Young Artist’s program. Paris”.  Appeared on  television and in numerous concert and recitals, including an all Verdi concert for the VSO and tenor soloist in Verdi’s Requiem

1990.  Studied  repertoire at the Royal Opera House, Convent Garden, attended classes at the National Opera Studio, London and undertook vocal coaching with  Joseph Ward  at the Royal Northern College of Music,  Manchester

1991. In London won the Webster Booth/Esso Award. While at the Royal Northern College of Music , his performances as  Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly were highly praised by the press leading to a number of engagements including “Idomeneo” with  the Halle Orchestra

1992. Debut with the (now) Opera Australia as Gabriele Adorno in  Simon Boccanegra, followed by  Don Ottavio  in  Don Giovanni  and Edgardo  in  Lucia di Lammermoor in 1993-1994. Repeated Edgardo for Canterbury Opera in New Zealand. Performed as Tamino in  The Magic Flute  for West Australian Opera and Victorian State Opera. Appearances with the Canberra Symphony orchestra under  Richard Bonynge  as well as Opera in the Park concerts in Auckland and Christchurch.

1995.  Opera Australia Alfredo” in Verdi’s  La Traviata  for  Opera as well as a sensational “Nemorino” in a new production of the  Elisir D’Amore  for West Australian Opera.

1996.  Sang  the role of “Alfredo” for the VSO at  Myer Music Bowl concert followed by an extremely successful recital at “the Bay of Islands Festival” of the Arts in New Zealand.  He also performed in a concert in a sell-out Opera Night in Noumea with performers from the Paris Opera in the same year.

1997. Successful USA debut as  Don Ottavio  in Pacific Opera’s  Don Giovanni .

1998-2000.  Concerts in Melbourne.  Opera concerts concerts with the New Zealand Chamber Orchestra and other  opera recitals in New Zealand. Concerts with the Melbourne Symphony under maestro Richard Bonynge.  New Year’s Eve concert with the Australian Pop Orchestra

Moved to Singapore. Sang  the  role of  Don José  in  Carmen   Repeated role of Canio in Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci for the Singapore Lyric Opera’s production both conducted by Maestro Lim Miao and sang in their   10th Anniversary Gala Concert in 2000.

2001.  Invited as the tenor soloist  in Handel’s Messiah by Instituto Cultural of Macau with  the Macau Chamber Orchestra  conducted by Maestro  Veiga Jardim.

2004. Engaged for the  Opera Gala Concert at the new Shanghai Grand Opera house   with the Shanghai Opera Orchestra and with  the Opera of China Orchestra  at the new Beijing Concert Hall.

2006.  Invited  as principal tenor by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra for the “Age of Bloom II” Concert at the Singapore Conference Hall in July 2006. The concert was conducted by Maestra Tsung Yeh. In the same year performed at the Chinese songs solo recital at the Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore.

2007.  Tenor soloist for  at the Singapore National Day Pre- celebration night show at the Marina Bay in Singapore on 9 August 2007.

2008.  Opera Gala Vocal Recital with soprano Xiuwei Sun  at the Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore.  2010.  He performed in the cantata “The Dream of Chang’an: Music of Zhao Ji Ping” with Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), in collaboration with Chinese Cultural Festival on 17th and 18th September 2010

2012.June.30. Quartet Bravi Vocal Recital. “An Opera Night” concert at Esplanade concert hall Singapore.June.

2015 – June.2017 Engaged with Peking University Academy of Opera as  Professor.  Head of opera study.
