Xiaoping Yu

Australian Soprano

Xiaoping Yu is a Soprano educated in the

Central Conservatory of Music, the most

prestigious music school of China. Her

teacher Jiang Ying, China’s legendary opera

singer and wife of scientist Qian Xuesen,

described Xiaoping’s voice as one

reminiscent of the late Maria Callas.

By age 26, Xiaoping was considered one of

China’s best opera singers, placing First

Place in the National Opera Competition of

1986. Zhou Xiaoyan, who was deemed by

The New York Times as ‘China’s First Lady of

Opera’, also regarded Xiaoping as having

one of the most powerful voices in China.

Xiaoping has performed extensively in China, Singapore and Australia. She held

two very successful solo concerts in 2004 with Yu Jixing, her brother and

acclaimed Tenor with Opera Australia, at China’s leading opera theatres in Beijing

Century Theatre and Shanghai Grand Theatre. Xiaoping lives with her family in

Melbourne, Australia, where she now works as a music educator.
